Forever Chemicals (PFAS) in Florida Drinking Water
PFAS (“Forever Chemicals”) are synthetic compounds used in nonstick cookware, firefighting foam, waterproof clothing, and food packaging. They don’t break down easily and accumulate in the environment and human body.
Situation in Florida
- Widespread Issue: Florida has detected PFAS in many public water systems due to the state’s sandy soils and shallow aquifers, which allow easy contamination.
- Hot Spots: Higher levels often near military bases (firefighting foam), airports, landfills, and industrial sites. Central and South Florida have seen notable detections.
- Cape Coral / Port St. Lucie: Trace levels have been found, but utilities report compliance with current guidelines. Monitoring is increasing.
- State Action: Florida DEP has health guidelines and is expanding testing. No strict enforceable MCL yet (federal proposal is 4 ppt for some PFAS).
Health Concerns
Long-term exposure linked to:
- Immune system suppression
- Thyroid disease
- Developmental issues in children
- Certain cancers (kidney, testicular)
- Increased cholesterol
